By Clay Imports

A more predictable and consistent terra cotta tile for the perfectionists.

Terra Cotta tile is more appreciated than ever, but high natural variation is not for everyone. We have refined the terra cotta production process to provide you with a predictable, reliable and beautiful product: Meet Dhanis Red Terra Cotta tile!

What is Dhanis tile?

Dhanis Red Terra cotta tiles are inspired by one of our favorite tiles that used to be produced in D’hanis, TX, long time ago. Like the original Dhanis tile, Clay Imports’ Dhanis Red Terra cotta tiles are made of natural red clay and measure 11-⅜ inches by 11-⅜ inches. Original Dhanis tiles were commonly used throughout the 1960s but are no longer in production. Many Texan residents with historic homes choose Clay Imports’ Dhanis Red Terra cotta tiles as replacements or replicas in place of original Dhanis tile. Now, designers and architects took note and spec Clay Imports’ Dhanis Red Terra cotta tiles to achieve a Mid-century modern aesthetic. If you are in the market for terra cotta tiles with minimal color variation, this tile might be for you!

The Look

Dark red, and consistent in color, Dhanis Red Terra cotta is the tile for lovers of mid-century modern design. They are also a great alternative to the popular Saltillo tile, but without the high color, texture and size variation. We love contemporary Dhanis installations, such as the Sweet Greens Restaurant in Austin.

What’s the difference between Dhanis Red Terra cotta tile and Saltillo Tile?

Because Dhanis Red Terra cotta tiles are handmade, expect some variations and irregularities. Generally though, they are more refined than Saltillo tiles. They are flatter, smoother and less varied in color and sheen. Dhanis Red Terra cotta tiles have ridged edges and corners that are minimally tumbled to reduce chipping. Saltillo tiles are going to be more varied in color and size, even if you choose a “red select” Saltillo tile. Saltillo tiles will have a prominent texture and more surface irregularities, no matter what.

In short, if you want a more organic, natural looking Terra cotta, go with Saltillo. If you prefer a more predictable tile with less character, go with Dhanis Red Terra cotta tile.
