What Is An Original D'hanis Tile?

D'hanis Red Terracotta tiles are inspired by one of our favorite terracotta tiles that were produced in D’hanis, Texas for over a century. Original D'hanis tiles were commonly used throughout the 1960s but are no longer in production.

What Is Clay Imports D'hanis Red Terracotta?

Like the original D'hanis tile, Clay Imports D'hanis Red Terracotta tiles are made of natural red clay and measure 11-⅜ inches by 11-⅜ inches. Many Texas residents with historic homes choose Clay Imports’ D'hanis Red Terracotta tiles as replacements in place of the original D'hanis tile.

D'hanis is known for its color and sheen consistency, but they can exhibit natural variations, which are inherent traits of natural materials like Terracotta. These variations in color, texture and sheen are not defects but rather a natural part of the product. We highly recommend ordering samples before making a final purchase to confirm and appreciate these natural variations in each tile.

What’s the difference between D'hanis Red Terracotta tile and Saltillo Tile?

Generally though, they are more refined than Saltillo tiles. They are flatter, smoother and less varied in color and sheen. D'hanis Red Terracotta tiles have ridged edges and corners that are minimally tumbled to reduce chipping. Saltillo tiles are going to be more varied in color and size. Saltillo tiles will have a prominent texture and more surface irregularities, no matter what.

In short, if you want a more organic, natural looking Terracotta, go with Saltillo. If you prefer a more predictable tile with less character, go with D'hanis Red Terracotta tile.

Can I use D'hanis Red Terracotta tiles on a floor?

Are D’hanis Red Terracotta tiles easy to maintain?

They are! It’s very easy to care for D'hanis Red Terracotta tiles. Just regular clean with non-acidic, conventional floor cleaners. However, keep in mind that D'hanis Red Terracotta tiles are sealed for durability and protection from moisture, but they are NOT glazed. This means that, much like a natural wood floor, they will change in color and sheen over the years and will eventually need to be re-sealed.

Why is D'hanis Red Terracotta tile more expensive than Red Select Saltillo?

The production process for D'hanis Red Terracotta tiles is more complicated than the production process for Saltillo tiles. Though Red Select Saltillo will be very similar in color to D'hanis Terracotta tile, the sheen, texture, and size are all going to be different. Saltillo tiles will have a more distressed texture, will vary more in size and thickness and will be significantly glossier than D'hanis Terracotta tiles.
