The History of D’hanis Tiles

D'Hanis tiles tiles are a type of clay tile that originated from the D'Hanis Brick and Tile Company in D'Hanis, Texas. This company was established in the late 1800s, thanks to a superior clay deposit discovered by Charles Wallrath near his home on the banks of Seco Creek, just west of this town.

The D'Hanis Brick and Tile Company quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality, handmade clay tiles and bricks. These tiles, made from natural clay rich in iron deposits, were renowned for their durability, rustic appearance, and signature reddish-brown terracotta tones.

By the mid-20th century, the company had ceased operations. The decline of the D'Hanis Brick and Tile Company was likely due to several factors, including advancements in manufacturing technology, the availability of alternative building materials, and possibly the economic shifts in rural Texas. As production techniques evolved, and as the construction industry increasingly favored newer materials, traditional clay products like those made by D'Hanis faced a declining market.

Although the original company no longer operates, the legacy of D'Hanis tiles lives on through the remaining products that are still highly valued for their quality and historic significance. Today, D'Hanis tiles are sought after for restoration projects or new constructions that aim to capture a traditional Southwestern or Spanish Colonial aesthetic.

What Sets D'Hanis Tiles Apart from Other Terracotta Tiles?

D'Hanis Red Terracotta tiles are defined by their deep red color and consistent earthy hue. Unlike other terracotta options, D'Hanis tiles are flatter, smoother, and less varied in color and sheen. This makes them ideal for those seeking a natural-looking terracotta tile with a more predictable, uniform appearance.

All tiles made by Clay Imports are crafted using traditional methods. While Saltillo tiles are hand-pressed, D’hanis tiles are pressed by machinery to achieve a more uniform appearance. Additionally, the firing process for D’Hanis tiles is carefully controlled, ensuring greater consistency in color and texture throughout the final product. This combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques results in a tile that offers the rustic charm of hand-made tiles with the added benefit of uniformity.

Due to their controlled fabrication process, D'Hanis tiles are generally more durable and less porous than Saltillo tiles, making them suitable for high-traffic areas and outdoor use in mild climates.

D’hanis Red tiles, offered by Clay Imports, may not be as dense as Cotto tiles, which is why every D’hanis Red tile is presealed to improve their durability and water resistance. This presealing process also gives the tiles a subtle satin finish, enhancing both their protection and aesthetic appeal. Although these Texan clay tiles have a more uniform look, you should expect some subtle variations in color and size within each tile. These variations are not defects but rather a natural part of the product. We highly recommend ordering samples before making a final purchase to confirm and appreciate these natural variations in each tile.

How to install D’hanis Tiles?

D'hanis Red Terracotta tiles are inspired by one of our favorite tiles that were produced in D’hanis, Texas for over a century. Original D'Hanis tiles were commonly used throughout the 1960s, making them a perfect fit for a Mid Century Modern design.

D'Hanis tiles work beautifully as flooring in living rooms, kitchens, hallways, and dining areas. Their durability makes them suitable for high-traffic spaces, and their warm, earthy tones add a rustic, traditional feel to any room.

As a walling option, D’hanis red tiles can be used as a backsplash behind bathroom sinks and kitchen countertops, as well as accent walls in your living room, bedroom, dining area or surrounding for a fireplace.
