HOW RECYCLED CLAY TILES ARE MADE

Recycled Clay tiles are made by crushing second-quality glazed tiles and blending them with locally harvested raw clay and recycled water. These tiles may have been slightly imperfect, but they become the foundation for something even better.

The reclaimed material is mixed into new clay bodies using water recovered from our clay press and glazing lines, then sun-dried and kiln-fired, ready for glazing. The result is a denser, stronger, and more durable tile that minimizes waste without compromising performance, aesthetics, or budget.

Tiles that don’t meet our quality standards are returned to the recycling process, creating an efficient, closed-loop system that benefits both your project and the planet.

HANDCRAFTED VARIATIONS

Each tile is individually formed, resulting in natural movement and subtle variation in color, surface, and flatness. These qualities are not defects, they’re part of what makes our tiles authentically handmade.

Slight curvature or irregularity may be visible, especially when installed with tight grout joints. For the best results, we recommend professional installation with proper substrate preparation, a high-quality thin-set mortar, and a moderate grout joint to help minimize lippage and maintain a balanced, natural appearance.

GROUT

TYPE
We recommend unsanded Mapei Ultracolor Plus grout for Recycled Clay tiles.

COLOR
- Contrasting Grout
Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA 5093 Warm Gray
- Monochrome Grout
Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA 5221 Moonbeam

JOINTS
Between 1/8" and 1/4" to accommodate the natural variation that comes with handmade tiles. It’s common for there to be slight size differences, up to ± 1/4", which is completely normal. A slightly wider grout line helps manage alignment and leveling.

While it’s possible to use a tighter grout joint, we highly recommend working with an experienced installer to ensure a successful result.

TRIM

Our Recycled Clay collection doesn't include trim tiles, but choosing a "no trim" method can achieve a clean, polished look. Here are some great alternatives:

  • Schluter | Sleek metal trim pieces available in various finishes and, our personal favorite a paintable option to create an nearly invisible transition.
  • Miter Cut | Achieve 45-degree angles for seamless corners and edges
  • Grout, Paint or Caulk | Use these materials along exposed tile edges for a polished finish

SEALING

No Sealing Required | Unlike unglazed clay tile, glazed tile does not require sealing. The glaze acts as a built-in protective layer, making it ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and other everyday spaces.

While our clay tiles typically do not need to be sealed again, we advise applying a protective sealant for tiles installed in wet areas such as shower surrounds, flooring, and exterior applications.

Sealant offers an additional layer of protection by sealing micropores, ensuring your tiles remain in excellent condition over time.

EASY MAINTENANCE

Glazed solid clay tile is one of the easiest handcrafted tiles to live with. The smooth, glazed surface naturally resists stains and moisture, making everyday care refreshingly simple.

Regular Cleaning | Sweep or vacuum as needed to remove dust and debris. For routine cleaning, a damp mop with warm water or a gentle, pH-neutral cleaner is all it takes to keep the surface looking fresh.

Skip Harsh Cleaners | Avoid bleach, ammonia, or acidic cleaners. A mild soap or non-acidic household cleaner will clean effectively without dulling the glaze. Use a soft cloth or mop to protect the finish.

Spills Are No Big Deal | Thanks to the glazed surface, spills wipe up easily. Simply clean with warm water or a pH-neutral cleaner as they happen.

Protect High-Traffic Areas | In busy spaces, rugs or mats can help reduce wear. Use felt or cloth pads underneath to prevent scratching.

With minimal upkeep and timeless character, glazed solid clay tile offers the best of both worlds: handcrafted beauty and easy, modern maintenance.
