GROUT + TRIM

GROUT TYPE

  • For a modern look or more color options, choose Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA.
  • For a classic Saltillo look, we recommend MAPEI 2-1/2 to 1 Saltillo Gray Sanded Grout, which pairs naturally with the warmth and variation of handmade terracotta.

Warm, neutral grout colors create a softer, tonal look with the natural clay, while contrasting colors create more definition around each tile. Highly contrasting grout colors are generally not recommended, as they can emphasize natural variation.

GROUT JOINT SPACING

Joint spacing typically ranges from 1/4" to 3/4".

Because Organic Terracotta is handmade, tighter joints may make natural variation in size and alignment more noticeable.

Larger joints work well with larger-format tiles, helping accommodate natural size variation while creating a more traditional terracotta look.

TRIM + TRANSITIONS

When transitioning between Organic Terracotta and another material or finishing an exposed edge:

  • Coping → Curved edge ideal for stairs, steps, and other finished transitions
  • Miter Cut → Clean 45° finish for corners, niches, and edges
  • Stairs + Steps → Use coordinating coping where appropriate, or miter tile at the tread and riser to create a finished 90° corner
  • Wood Transition → Creates a finished connection between terracotta and wood flooring; finished heights may vary
  • Schluter Trim → Clean metal edge for floors or walls and a more modern finish
  • Exposed Edge → A simple, organic option; exposed terracotta edges must be properly sealed

SEALING + MAINTENANCE

SEALING
Organic Terracotta arrives unsealed and requires sealing before and after installation to protect against moisture absorption and staining.

We recommend using a penetrating sealer followed by a top coat sealer to achieve the desired finish and level of protection.

  • Penetrating sealers help reduce absorption and prepare the tile for use.
  • Top coat sealers provide surface protection, sheen, and durability.

We recommend Ultra Low VOC Sealer for a subtle finish, though other sealers may be used depending on the desired look.

Always test sealers on a small area before full application to ensure compatibility and appearance.

RESEALING

There is no fixed resealing schedule. Frequency depends on traffic, environment, sealer system, and desired appearance.

Some installations may require more frequent resealing than others, particularly in high-traffic or moisture-prone areas.

A simple test: If water no longer beads on the protected surface and begins absorbing into the tile or grout, resealing is recommended.

ROUTINE CARE

For regular cleaning, use a pH-neutral cleaner and avoid harsh or acidic products that may affect the sealer or natural clay.

  • Routine Cleaning: Sweep, dust, or vacuum regularly to remove dirt and debris.
  • Damp Mopping: Use warm water and Palo Santo Cleaner Concentrate for routine cleaning.
  • Cleaning Products: Avoid bleach, ammonia, acidic cleaners, and other harsh chemicals. Always use pH-neutral products.
  • Spills: Clean spills promptly to help prevent staining.
  • Furniture: Use furniture pads and avoid dragging heavy objects across the tile.
  • Rugs + Mats: Use felt or cloth-backed pads beneath rugs and mats, especially in high-traffic areas.

INSTALLATION

Organic Terracotta is handmade, with natural variation in size, thickness, edges, and surface character. Proper installation should account for this variation rather than attempt to eliminate it.

Review the complete installation guide before beginning for recommended preparation, setting, sealing, grouting, and finishing methods.

Please Note: Organic Terracotta arrives unsealed, which can make the installation process more demanding. To ensure the best results, we highly recommend sealing Organic Terracotta tiles both before and after installation using our Ultra Low VOC sealer.
