GROUT + TRIM

GROUT TYPE

Use a high-performance grout rated for wet or submerged applications. Epoxy or high-performance cementitious grout may be used depending on the installation.

Always follow the grout manufacturer's guidelines for pool and submerged applications.

GROUT COLOR

We recommend testing grout on a loose piece of tile before full application.

Dark or highly pigmented grouts may penetrate the surface of the tile and result in permanent staining. For this reason, we recommend lighter or complementary grout colors rather than a strong contrast.

GROUT JOINT SPACING

We recommend a 1/8"–3/16" grout joint for Pool Waterline Tile.

Because each tile is handmade, natural variation in size and edge shape is expected. Slightly wider joints can help accommodate this variation and maintain consistent alignment throughout the installation.

TRIM + EDGES

When finishing an edge or transition:

  • Bullnose → Available for select Pool Waterline tiles for a finished, rounded edge
  • Mitered Edge → Creates a clean transition using the field tile

SEALING + MAINTENANCE

SEALING

Pool Waterline Tile requires sealing before installation. Unlike our pre-sealed terracotta, the glazed surface protects the face of the tile, while the exposed clay body, back, and edges remain absorbent.

We recommend dip-sealing each tile with a high-quality penetrating sealer before installation.

  • Dip each tile individually for approximately 2 seconds
  • Immediately wipe excess sealer from the glazed face
  • Allow tiles to dry completely before installation
  • Seal any newly exposed edges after cutting

POST-INSTALLATION SEALING

Once the grout has fully cured and the installation is completely dry, penetrating sealer should be applied to the finished installation for additional protection of the grout and exposed clay.

We recommend 2–3 thin coats, depending on absorption and the sealer manufacturer's instructions.

RESEALING

Pool environments create ongoing exposure to water, minerals, chlorine, and salt. We recommend inspecting the installation regularly and resealing approximately once per year, or sooner when needed.

Pay particular attention to grout joints, cut edges, and other areas where the clay body may be exposed.

MAINTENANCE

Clean regularly using warm water and a soft cloth, sponge, or non-abrasive brush. For deeper cleaning, use a pH-neutral cleaner suitable for glazed tile.

Avoid bleach, ammonia, acidic or highly alkaline cleaners, steel wool, and abrasive cleaning tools, which may damage the glaze or compromise the sealer.

For mineral buildup or waterline scale, use a pH-neutral descaler formulated for glazed or pool tile and test in an inconspicuous area first.

This places the tile within the Vitreous category:
