NATURAL TERRACOTTA | SATIN

STRAIGHT FROM THE EARTH

Saltillo tiles originate from Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. Just as Champagne must be produced in the Champagne region of France, authentic Saltillo tiles must come from this specific Mexican region.

  • SHEEN | SEALANT

Satin pre-sealed terracotta tiles feature a delicate shine creating a semi-gloss, low-sheen finish. With three protective layers of sealer, these tiles are well-equipped to resist stains and moisture, although it's important to note that minor scratches may still develop over time. The finish accentuates the natural colors of the terracotta, making it a chic and low-maintenance tile. For optimal durability, we suggest applying our Ultra Low VOC Sealant (satin sealant) as a top layer.

    COLOR "TERRATONES"

Boasting a medley of muted hues from terracotta to orange to subtle yellow, all with a semi-gloss finish. Each piece showcases its own unique color variations, a result of the natural firing process that introduces an unpredictable spectrum of shades. Sealer will impact the final color. Larger pieces tend to showcase more color diversity compared to smaller tiles, enhancing the distinct charm of each tile.

    NATURAL VARIATIONS

Unique surface variations and textures are telltale signs of genuine handmade tiles. These characteristics are exclusive to authentic tiles, like ours. It is normal to find natural indentations, bumps, divots, scuffs, variations and even paw prints on the surface. Excess clay or minor chips may be present on the surface, edges, or back of the tile. Irregular marks or lines that resemble fold marks may be present, all of which are common characteristics of authentic, handmade terracotta tile.

GROUT

TYPE
We recommend Mapei Natural Saltillo grout for Natural Terracotta tiles.

JOINTS
Saltillo tile joint spacing can be as wide as 3/4” and as narrow as 1/4”. Generally, smaller joint sizes are used with smaller tiles (6” and under) and tend to look more modern.

Larger joints are used with larger format tiles to accommodate for irregular sizing of handmade tiles while maintaining straight joints and their traditional aesthetic.

TRIM

Ready to add those final touches to your tile project? Here's how different trim options can enhance your design:

Bullnose:
Versatile transition piece suitable for floors or walls, featuring a rounded bullnose edge for smooth surface transitions.

Coping:
Ideal for stair finishing, offering a smooth, curved design for a polished appearance.

Miter Cut:
Easily create 45-degree angles for corners, niches, and edges with miter cuts. You can also customize standard pieces for unique trim.

Exposed Edge:
Embrace the natural look by leaving edges unfinished. Remember to seal your edges!

SEALANT

Our terracotta tiles are delivered with a pre-sealed finish. To maintain their appearance, we recommend applying an additional top coat seal after installation, and periodically thereafter for upkeep and to rejuvenate their look.

For optimal protection, particularly in high-traffic or moisture-prone areas, we recommend our Ultra Low VOC top coat sealer.

  • This will preserve the tiles' appearance.
  • A top coat of sealer effectively seals the grout, helping to maintain its integrity and color.
  • Top coat sealers are different from the factory sealant and offers an extra layer of protection, by enhance their durability especially for high traffic areas.

RESEALING FREQUENCY

The timing for resealing can vary based on several factors, including the level of foot traffic, aesthetic preferences, and the overall usage. There isn’t a fixed timeline for resealing; it depends on the specific circumstances of your space.

Some choose to reseal after 1 year, 3 years, 5 years, or decide to forgo resealing altogether. To check if it’s time for resealing, look for signs such as noticeable changes in color or water no longer beading on the surface. If liquid absorbs instead of repels, it's a good indicator that resealing is recommended. Ultimately, the decision to reseal is tailored to each project and reflects individual preferences.

MAINTENANCE

Regular maintenance is crucial for preserving the beauty and durability of your tile flooring. Here's a comprehensive guide to keep your terracotta tile looking pristine:

1. Regular Cleaning:
To maintain cleanliness, regularly sweep, dust, or vacuum your terracotta tile. Opt for a soft-bristled broom or a vacuum cleaner. For deeper cleaning, use a damp mop with warm water and our Palo Santo Cleaner Concentrate to remove dirt and grime.to remove dirt and grime.

2. Avoid Harsh Chemicals:
Steer clear of bleach or ammonia, as they can harm or discolor the tile. Instead, utilize pH-neutral cleaners like soap or household non-acidic cleaners. These effectively remove stains without damaging the tile. When cleaning, use a soft cloth or mop to prevent scratching.

3. Tackle Tough Stains Carefully:
For stubborn stains, consider using a slightly more abrasive cleaner after testing it on a hidden area first. Ensure thorough removal of cleaning solution residue to maintain the tile's luster.

4. Prompt Spill Cleanup:
Address spills promptly to prevent staining. Use a soft cloth with warm water or a pH-neutral cleaner for effective spill removal.

5. Prevent Scratches:
While terracotta tile is durable, it's still susceptible to scratches. Avoid dragging heavy furniture across the tile and utilize furniture pads to prevent scratches.

6. Utilize Rugs:
Place mats or rugs in high-traffic or moisture-prone areas like entryways or kitchens to minimize wear and tear. Opt for felt or cloth pads under rugs to prevent potential damage from rubber padding.

7. Wet Areas Maintenance:
For wet areas such as shower surrounds or exterior applications, periodically apply a protective sealant. While not mandatory, sealant adds an extra layer of protection by sealing micropores, ensuring your tile remains in optimal condition.

By adhering to these maintenance practices, you can prolong the lifespan and beauty of your terracotta tile flooring.
