VARIATION

Our handmade Equipale furniture is crafted in Mexico using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Each piece is made by hand using solid wood frames and natural pigskin leather, so variation is not only expected, it’s part of its authenticity.

Natural leather will vary in tone, texture, and grain. You may notice differences in color compared to samples, along with natural markings, subtle scars, stretch lines, and tonal shifts. These characteristics are inherent to genuine pigskin leather and make every piece one of a kind.

If you prefer a deeper, richer tone, natural pigskin leather will darken beautifully over time with use and exposure to sunlight. Placing your piece in indirect sun can help accelerate this natural patina process.

Wood frames may also feature visible knots, grain variation, small cracks, or slight movement over time due to changes in climate. Because each piece is handcrafted, minor variations in shape, tension, and finish are normal.

No two pieces will ever be identical, and that is the beauty of authentic Equipale.

HISTORY + OUR STORY

Handcrafted equipales originated over 500 years ago with skilled artisans of the Aztec Empire in central Mexico. Using organic, regional materials to create furniture that balanced comfort and beauty, these makers established a design tradition that has endured for generations.

Today, authentic equipal furniture is still handmade in Zacoalco de Torres, Jalisco, a small town south of Guadalajara, where artisans continue these time-honored techniques.

In the 20th century, equipales gained popularity through photography of Mexican beach resorts. As demand increased, production scaled and quality often declined.

Our New School Equipal collection was created to restore the craftsmanship and integrity of traditional equipal furniture while embracing a more thoughtful, sustainable approach. Each piece is made from 100% natural and biodegradable materials, including locally sourced pigskin leather, Mexican rosewood, and waxed cotton twine. Select pieces are also available in water-based colors, vegan options, and custom sizes.

This is heritage craftsmanship, made for modern spaces.

LEATHER + WOOD CARE

In order to maintain the furniture’s high-quality leather and wood, we suggest regular applications of leather conditioner  and wood-furniture polish. If you are not going for an aged look and your leather is scratched or scuffed, we have touch up paint available to repair small damages to painted equipal. Lastly, if your natural or painted leather equipal gets wet, avoid drying in the sun. Instead, bring it inside or under a shaded area to dry. We recommend using non-acidic and non-ammonia based cleaners for regular cleaning of painted equipal.

VEGAN | OUTDOOR

Much like our traditional leather equipal pieces, the vegan equipal furniture line is handmade in Jalisco, Mexico, by artisan communities that have been crafting equipal furniture for generations. Our goal was to develop a more sustainable, more durable equipal furniture line that maintained as many traditional qualities as possible. Low maintenance was one of our top priorities when designing this product. Vegan equipal furniture is easy to care for and stain-resistant while staying true to the minimal design. Vegan Equipal feature weather-resistant upholstery and durable deck sealant applied to the rosewood frame.
