SUPER SALTILLO
STRAIGHT FROM THE EARTH

PRODUCT DETAILS
HOW IT'S MADE
Supremo Saltillo Terracotta is handcrafted using traditional techniques that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. Local Tierra Rica clay is shaped by hand, sun-dried, and kiln-fired at low temperatures, creating a porous, character-rich tile that is uniquely Saltillo.
Each tile is sun-dried for 6 to 8 hours. On occasion, a dog or chicken may leave a footprint. A small, charming signature of authenticity.
After drying, the tiles are kiln-fired for 36 hours, then cooled for an additional 32 to 36 hours. Once complete, every tile is hand-selected by skilled artisans. Only the best make the cut.
The rest are removed. Because you deserve the perfect, imperfect tile.
GROUT
TYPE
- For a modern look or more color options, choose Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA.
- For a classic Saltillo look, we recommend MAPEI 2-1/2 to 1 Saltillo Gray Sanded Grout, which pairs naturally with the warmth and variation of handmade terracotta.
JOINT SPACING
Joint spacing typically ranges from 1/4" to 3/4".
Smaller joints (1/4") feel cleaner and more modern and are best for smaller tiles (6" and under). Because Saltillo is handmade, tighter joints may show subtle variation in width or alignment.
Larger joints work well with larger tiles, helping accommodate natural size variation while maintaining straighter, more traditional lines.
TRIM
If you’re transitioning between terracotta and another flooring material, these are the most common and effective options:
Wood transition
A matching wood door transition creates a seamless visual connection between terracotta and wood flooring. Finished height may vary slightly depending on subfloor conditions.
Schluter trim
A clean, versatile aluminum option suitable for both floors and walls. Schluter trim provides a simple, modern transition between surfaces.
Exposed edge
For a more organic look, edges may be left exposed. Be sure all exposed edges are properly sealed for protection.
SEALANT
Supremo Saltillo Terracotta is delivered with a pre-sealed finish. After installation, we recommend applying an additional top coat sealer to protect the surface, enhance durability, and refresh the appearance over time.
For ongoing maintenance and added protection, especially in high-traffic or moisture-prone areas, we recommend Polish Top Coat or Ultra Low VOC Sealer.
Top coat sealers differ from the factory seal and provide:
- An additional protective layer for the tile surface
- Sealing and protection of grout joints
- Enhanced durability in high-traffic areas
RESEALING FREQUENCY
Resealing frequency depends on traffic level, environment, and personal aesthetic preference. There is no fixed schedule.
Some spaces benefit from resealing after 1 year, while others may go 3 to 5 years or longer. To determine if resealing is needed, observe the surface. If water no longer beads and instead absorbs into the tile or grout, resealing is recommended.
Ultimately, resealing is a project-specific decision based on use and desired appearance.
MAINTENANCE
Proper care helps preserve the beauty and longevity of terracotta tile.
Regular cleaning
Sweep, dust, or vacuum regularly using a soft-bristle broom or vacuum. For deeper cleaning, damp mop with warm water and Palo Santo Cleaner Concentrate.
Avoid harsh chemicals
Do not use bleach or ammonia. Choose pH-neutral, non-acidic cleaners to prevent damage or discoloration.
Stains and spills
Clean spills promptly using a soft cloth and warm water or a pH-neutral cleaner. For tougher stains, test any stronger cleaner in an inconspicuous area first.
Scratch prevention
Use furniture pads and avoid dragging heavy items across the surface.
Rugs and mats
Place rugs or mats in high-traffic or moisture-prone areas. Use felt or cloth-backed pads rather than rubber.
Wet areas
In showers, exterior, or moisture-exposed spaces, periodic application of a protective sealer is recommended to help seal micropores and maintain performance.

SHEEN | SEALER
Apply Polish Top Coat sealer periodically for upkeepSupremo Saltillo Terracotta is traditionally sealed to protect the surface and enhance its natural color. Depending on the sealer selected, the final appearance can range from soft matte to a subtle, traditional sheen inspired by historic Mexican haciendas. Over time, light surface wear such as fine scratches may develop. This is normal and contributes to the lived-in patina Saltillo is known for. Periodic application of a polish top coat helps maintain protection and appearance.
-
COLOR "TERRATONES"
Each Supremo tile is a one-of-a-kind creation. Expect warm, earthy terratones ranging from muted terracotta and soft clay to golden ochre and creamy butterscotch. These tonal shifts occur naturally due to clay chemistry and firing variables, often appearing as gentle color movement or striping, a beloved hallmark of authentic Saltillo tile.
-
TEXTURE | VARIATION
6 Characteristics of Authentic Saltillo TilesSaltillo’s organic charm lies in its natural imperfections. Expect light bumps, divots, subtle chips, edge variation, firing shadows, and surface scuffs or color streaks. You may also notice fine surface pores, hairline cracks, hand-pressed textures, sun-drying marks, and the occasional animal footprint. These characteristics are purely aesthetic and tell the story of the land, the sun, and the artisan behind each tile.
