GROUT TYPE
A sanded grout is recommended. We commonly suggest Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA, which performs well with wider joints and offers added durability for floors and higher-traffic areas.
Laticrete Permacolor is also a suitable alternative.
GROUT JOINT SPACING
We recommend a 3/8" minimum grout joint, with joints up to 1/2" being common for this tile.
Because each paver is handmade, wider joints help accommodate natural variation in size, thickness, and edges while creating a balanced finished installation.
Always test grout color and joint spacing with a small mock-up before full installation.

SEALING
All Terracotta Pavers arrive unsealed.
Thin Pavers | Interior + Thin-Set Applications
Sealing is recommended. Apply a penetrating sealer before grouting to help reduce staining and moisture absorption, then seal again after installation for additional surface and grout protection.
Thick Pavers | Exterior + Sand-Set Applications
Do not seal. Sealing exterior, sand-set pavers can trap moisture within the terracotta and contribute to efflorescence.
Always test sealers on a loose piece before full application, as sealers may alter the natural color and appearance of the terracotta.
RESEALING
For sealed Thin Pavers, there is no fixed resealing schedule. Frequency depends on traffic, environment, and the sealer used.
Monitor the surface over time and reseal as needed according to the sealer manufacturer's recommendations.
Thick, exterior sand-set pavers should remain unsealed.
MAINTENANCE
Thin Pavers | Interior + Thin-Set Applications
Sweep or vacuum regularly and damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. Clean spills promptly and avoid acidic cleaners, bleach, harsh chemicals, and abrasive cleaning tools that may damage the terracotta or sealer.
Thick Pavers | Exterior + Sand-Set Applications
Minimal maintenance is required. Regular sweeping, occasional joint sand refresh, and visual inspection will help address movement or settling over time.
Avoid harsh or acidic cleaners that may affect the natural terracotta.

THIN PAVERS | THIN-SET INSTALLATION
Thin Pavers are installed similarly to traditional tile using a thin-set and grout installation.
- Install over a flat, rigid, properly prepared substrate
- Set using a polymer-modified LHT thin-set mortar
- Back-butter each paver to achieve proper mortar coverage
- Allow for a minimum 3/8" grout joint
- Finish with sanded grout
- Dry-lay and blend pavers from multiple boxes before installation
Because these pavers are handmade, variations in size, thickness, flatness, texture, and edges are expected. Your installer should account for these characteristics during installation.
THICK PAVERS | SAND-SET INSTALLATION
Thick Pavers are designed for traditional sand-set exterior installations rather than a standard thin-set and grout installation.
- Install over a properly prepared and compacted base
- Set pavers into a leveled bedding layer of sand
- Fill joints with appropriate jointing sand
- Account for proper drainage and slope away from structures
- Blend pavers throughout the installation to distribute natural color and size variation
- Do not seal exterior sand-set pavers, as sealing can trap moisture and contribute to efflorescence
Thick Pavers are intended for exterior, ground-level applications in non-freeze climates and are not recommended for vehicle traffic.

Baked Pavers arrive unsealed, allowing the natural clay to age and develop character over time.
Sealing depends on the application. Thin Pavers used indoors are typically sealed for added protection, while Thick Pavers installed outdoors are left unsealed to allow moisture to move naturally through the clay.
Over time, especially outdoors, expect the terracotta to develop a natural patina as it responds to use and the surrounding environment.
Baked Pavers are handcrafted from natural clay using traditional forming techniques before being slowly kiln-fired to create a durable, long-lasting terracotta paver. Because every piece is individually made rather than machine-pressed, each paver carries the warmth, texture, and character that define authentic handmade clay.
The result is a timeless material that celebrates natural variation while offering lasting performance for both residential and commercial projects.
Variation is part of what makes authentic handmade terracotta pavers special. Expect natural differences in size, texture, flatness, and color. Surface details such as gentle indentations, lime pops, divots, tonal shifts, excess clay, small edge chips, irregular markings, and visible distressing are normal and celebrated characteristics of true handmade clay, not defects.
The level of distressing varies by paver thickness.
- Thinner pavers tend to have a slightly more refined surface
- Thicker pavers are intentionally more rustic, featuring heavier texture, deeper variation, and occasional missing chips that enhance their old-world character.
No two pavers are exactly alike, and that individuality is what creates a warm, lived-in, and timeless finished installation. For the most balanced look, we strongly recommend dry-laying and blending pavers from multiple boxes during installation.
