INSTALLATION DETAILS
GROUT
For a modern look or expanded color options, use Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA.
For a classic Saltillo look, we recommend MAPEI 2-1/2 to 1 Saltillo Gray Sanded Grout, which complements the natural warmth and variation of handmade terracotta.
JOINT SPACING
Joint spacing typically ranges from 1/4" to 3/4".
- Smaller joints (1/4") create a cleaner, more modern look and work best with smaller tiles (6" and under). Expect slight variation due to the handmade nature of Saltillo.
- Larger joints (up to 3/4") work well with larger tiles, helping accommodate size variation while maintaining more traditional lines.
TRIM AND TRANSITIONS
When transitioning between terracotta and another material:
- Wood transition - Creates a warm, seamless connection to wood flooring. Finished height may vary slightly.
- Schluter trim - A clean aluminum edge for floors or walls. Ideal for a simple, modern finish.
- Exposed edge - For a more organic look. All exposed edges must be properly sealed.
IMPORTANT NOTES
- Shower walls require proper waterproofing and compatible sealers.
- Exterior applications require waterproofing, sealing, and ongoing maintenance. Not suitable for freezing climates.
SEALING
SEALING
SEALING
Saltillo is delivered pre-sealed. After installation, apply a top coat sealer to protect the surface, improve durability, and maintain appearance over time.
We recommend Polish Top Coat or Ultra Low VOC Sealer, especially in high-traffic or moisture-prone areas.
Top coat sealers provide:
- An additional protective layer for the tile surface
- Sealing and protection of grout joints
- Enhanced durability in high-traffic areas
RESEALING
There is no fixed resealing schedule. Frequency depends on traffic, environment, and desired appearance.
Some installations may need resealing after 1 year, while others may go 3 to 5 years or longer.
A simple test: If water no longer beads and begins to absorb into the tile or grout, resealing is recommended.

SUPREMO
Supremo offers the warmth and variation of terracotta with the character of authentic Saltillo tile. Crafted for a balanced, cohesive look across modern and classic spaces.
Each tile is shaped, sun-dried, and fired using traditional methods passed down through generations. The result is a tile with unmatched warmth, natural variation, and character that simply cannot be replicated by machine-made terracotta.
Supremo Saltillo Terracotta is handcrafted using traditional techniques that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. Local Tierra Rica clay is shaped by hand, sun-dried, and kiln-fired at low temperatures, creating a porous, character-rich tile that is uniquely Saltillo.
Each tile is sun-dried for 6 to 8 hours. On occasion, a dog or chicken may leave a footprint. A small, charming signature of authenticity.
After drying, the tiles are kiln-fired for 36 hours, then cooled for an additional 32 to 36 hours. Once complete, every tile is hand-selected by skilled artisans. Only the best make the cut.
The rest are removed. Because you deserve the perfect, imperfect tile.
Supremo is delivered pre-sealed, giving the tile a finished surface before installation.
The sealer enriches the natural terracotta tones, helps protect against staining, and creates a more consistent appearance across the installation. After installation, an additional top coat sealer is recommended to protect the surface, seal grout joints, and support long-term durability.
Because the tile is already sealed, Supremo requires less intensive preparation than unsealed terracotta, while still benefiting from ongoing care and maintenance.
Supremo carries the natural characteristics of terracotta while offering a more balanced and consistent appearance.
You can expect:
- Fine surface pores, sometimes referred to as lime pops
- Hairline cracks and sun-drying marks
- Subtle to moderate variation in color within a warm terracotta range
- Gentle tonal movement, including light shading or striping
- Minor surface markings such as small indentations or handling marks
- Light bumps, divots, subtle chips, and edge variation
- Occasional paw print
Each tile is made from natural clay and will not be perfectly uniform. Variation between tiles and batches is expected.
These characteristics are purely aesthetic and reflect the origin of the material. Shaped by the land, the sun, and the hands that made it.
Terracotta is a living material that evolves over time.
Supremo develops a more subtle and controlled patina compared to traditional Saltillo. Because the tile is pre-sealed, most aging occurs at the surface level and is influenced by use, maintenance, and top coat sealer.
Over time, the finish may soften slightly and tones may deepen. With proper care, the tile maintains a balanced appearance while gaining warmth and character.
Each installation will evolve differently depending on use and environment.
