GROUT + TRIM

GROUT TYPE

  • For a modern look or more color options, choose Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA.
  • For a classic Saltillo look, we recommend MAPEI 2-1/2 to 1 Saltillo Gray Sanded Grout, which pairs naturally with the warmth and variation of handmade terracotta.

GROUT JOINT SPACING

Joint spacing typically ranges from 1/4" to 3/4".

Smaller joints (1/4") create a cleaner, more modern look and work best with smaller tiles (6" and under). Because Saltillo is handmade, tighter joints may make natural variation in size and alignment more noticeable.

Larger joints work well with larger-format tiles, helping accommodate natural size variation while creating the more traditional look associated with Saltillo.

TRIM + TRANSITIONS

When transitioning between Saltillo and another material or finishing an exposed edge:

  • Bullnose → Rounded edge for smooth transitions on floors or walls
  • Coping → Curved edge ideal for stairs and steps
  • Wood Transition → Creates a finished connection between Saltillo and wood flooring; finished heights may vary
  • Schluter Trim → Clean metal edge for floors or walls and a more modern finish
  • Exposed Edge → A simple, organic option; exposed terracotta edges must be properly sealed

SEALING + MAINTENANCE

Saltillo is delivered pre-sealed. After installation, apply a top coat sealer to protect the surface, improve durability, and maintain appearance over time.

We recommend Ultra Low VOC Satin Sealer especially in high-traffic or moisture-prone areas.

Top coat sealers provide:

  • An additional protective layer for the tile surface
  • Sealing and protection of grout joints
  • Enhanced durability in high-traffic areas

RESEALING

There is no fixed resealing schedule. Frequency depends on traffic, environment, and the desired appearance.

Some installations may need resealing after 1 year, while others may go 3–5 years or longer.

A simple test: If water no longer beads on the surface and begins absorbing into the tile or grout, it's time to reseal.

MAINTENANCE

Sweep or vacuum regularly and clean with a pH-neutral cleaner such as our Palo Santo Cleaner Concentrate. Avoid bleach, ammonia, acidic cleaners, and abrasive tools that may damage the sealer.

Clean spills promptly, use felt pads beneath furniture, and place mats in high-traffic areas to help reduce wear.
