FAQ

Is sealing required?

Yes. Before installation, we recommend sealing each tile with a penetrating sealer, ideally, Clay Imports Penetrating Sealer. For best results:

  • Dip each tile into the sealer for 2 seconds (making sure that the entire surface is adequately coated)
  • Wipe away excess from the glazed surface with a clean, lint-free cloth
  • Let the tiles dry face-up on a stable, flat surface for at least 1 hour minimum

This drying period is crucial as it ensures that the sealer penetrates the tile effectively, providing the best possible protection.

Are these tiles pool rated?

Our Pool Waterline tiles are made from high-fired, dense cotto clay and finished with a durable, ceramic glaze.

While they are not ASTM-certified for submerged use, they are specifically designed for vertical pool waterline applications. When properly sealed and installed, they are suitable for both chlorinated and saltwater pools.

We recommend dip-sealing each tile with a penetrating sealant to enhance resistance to water absorption and salt or chemical exposure.

Are these waterline tiles freeze proof?

No. These tiles are not freeze-proof. In freeze-prone climates, proper installation and added protection, such as drainage and expansion joints, are essential. Follow our waterline installation guide closely to help reduce the risk of cracking due to freeze-thaw cycles.

Will Pool Waterline tiles crack?

Cracking is rare with proper installation. Use a waterproof membrane or barrier underlayment, and follow our waterline installation guide to enhance long-term durability.

Minor crazing (fine surface cracking in the glaze) may appear over time. This is a normal aesthetic characteristic of handmade glazed tile and does not impact performance.

What is the difference between standard clay tiles and Pool Waterline Tiles?

Pool Waterline tiles are fired at higher temperatures and pressed with more force than standard handmade clay tiles. This creates a denser tile body with lower moisture absorption.

  • Standard Clay Tiles: Higher absorbency; not ideal for wet areas
  • Pool Waterline Tiles: Denser, more water-resistant, suited for pool environments when properly sealed

Absorbency Range:

  • Recommended by pros: 0.05%–3%
  • Our Pool Waterline tiles: 3%–7%

With correct sealing and installation, they perform well in outdoor pool environments.

Can Pool Waterline tiles be fully submerged?

These tiles are not recommended for fully submerged use, such as pool interiors or floors. While some customers have successfully used them in fountains or submerged features, these applications require expert installation, meticulous sealing, and ongoing maintenance.

A fully submerged installation, such as pool steps, floors, or in-floor features, keeps the tile and the entire setting system (thinset, grout, waterproofing membrane) in constant water contact. This creates continuous hydrostatic pressure and requires a tile body, glaze, and installation system rated for continuous submersion per ANSI A137.1 and TCNA standards. These tiles are manufactured and tested for water absorption rates, chemical resistance, and thermal stability in that environment.

Our waterline tiles are designed for a mixed-exposure zone: the lower portion remains submerged, while the upper portion is exposed to cycles of drying, UV exposure, temperature fluctuations, and concentrated chemical/mineral deposits from evaporation. Because only part of the tile is submerged in normal use, these tiles are not engineered or tested for the continuous, all-surface water exposure seen in fully submerged environments. Over time, full submersion can stress the glaze, increase risk of efflorescence, and compromise adhesion in ways the product wasn’t designed to withstand.

For full-submersion or pool interior installations, we recommend pool-rated porcelain or vitreous tiles.

Can I install these tiles on a fountain?

Yes, Pool Waterline tiles can be used in fountain designs. Just like in pool waterline installations, you can expect some patina development and surface crazing over time. These are natural characteristics of handmade glazed tile.

What is the lifespan of these tiles?

When sealed and installed properly, Pool Waterline tiles can last decades. Regular upkeep, including periodic inspections and resealing, helps preserve their beauty and integrity.

Do you offer a warranty on the installation?

Clay Imports provides general installation guidelines, but we do not offer a warranty on installation outcomes. Since project success depends heavily on installer technique, we strongly recommend hiring a qualified professional.

Always inspect your tile upon receipt. Let us know right away if anything looks off, we’re here to help.
