This small-but-mighty brick-and-mortar café proves that great design, meaningful materials, and a clear vision can transform just 190 square feet into a space that feels expansive in all the ways that matter.

From its cozy atmosphere to its handcrafted Tableta tile coffee bar, Milk + Honey Coffee is a love letter to community, Mexican heritage, and the ritual of cafecito shared at the end of the day.

Inspired by Cafecito and Community

At its core, Milk + Honey Coffee was born from something simple: a deep love for coffee and the way it brings people together.

The owners, husband and wife team Michael and Mayra Gonzalez, often think back to evenings spent with family, something sweet on the table, cafecito in hand, conversation flowing. After becoming parents, that appreciation for coffee deepened even more. What started as a love for the ritual evolved into a desire to create a space that captured that same warmth and connection.

Their vision? A cozy, warm, and inviting coffee shop where people could gather, unwind, and feel at home.

If the shop had a soundtrack, it would be "Low Sun" by Hermanos Gutiérrez, ambient, soulful, and effortlessly grounding. It’s the kind of music that makes you want to stay awhile. And that’s exactly the point.

Designing Around Heritage and Handmade Tile

The visual direction of Milk + Honey Coffee is rooted in two guiding principles: honoring Mexican heritage and embracing natural materials.

Rather than treating tile as an afterthought, the team designed the entire space around the Clay Imports Tableta tiles, making them the focal point of the coffee bar. The chosen color, Mexican Vanilla, felt especially serendipitous, as it also happens to be their most popular latte flavor.

The tiles themselves were created in collaboration with Hijita Chocolate (whose products are used in the shop), tying together flavor, design, and storytelling in one beautiful detail.

“We based our design around the Tableta tiles because we wanted them to be the focal point of the coffee shop.”

To make the tiles truly stand out, they selected Acorn by Mapei as the grout color, a warm contrast that highlights the handcrafted texture while blending seamlessly with the earthy floors. The result? A coffee bar that immediately draws you in the moment you walk through the door.

And it shows. Customers frequently mention that the first thing they noticed, even in photos online, was the tile.

Small Space, Big Intention: Designing a 190-Square-Foot Coffee Shop

One of the biggest challenges during the build was maximizing the footprint. At just 190 square feet, every inch had to serve a purpose.

A cozy, warm, and inviting atmosphere was achieved with natural materials.

The team carefully considered workflow and customer experience, asking questions like:

  • How can the baristas move efficiently?
  • Where will customers feel most comfortable?
  • How can seating exist without overcrowding the space?
  • The solution was thoughtful and custom: An extended coffee bar to accommodate equipment and provide adequate workspace.
  • A built-in bench to anchor the seating area.
  • Attached tables to maximize flexibility.

Despite its size, the shop feels intentional rather than cramped, a testament to smart spatial planning and a clear design vision.

How Design Shapes the Experience

Design isn’t just aesthetic here; it shapes how people feel.

The earthy tones, natural materials, and handcrafted clay tile create an environment that invites people to stay. Customers gather with friends, hold meetings, or simply sit and read. The space supports it all.

And for the owners, one of the most surprising parts has been just how warmly the community embraced it.

“Creating something and sharing it with others is scary… We just hoped that they would love it as much as we did.”

Discovering Clay Imports

Milk + Honey Coffee discovered Clay Imports through Google and Instagram while searching for something that felt authentic and handcrafted. What stood out was the integrity of the materials, tile made from the earth, formed with care, and rich in character.

That commitment to natural materials aligned perfectly with their own values. And today, the Tableta tile coffee bar isn’t just a design feature; it’s the heart of the space.

Advice for Future Coffee Shop Owners

Opening a coffee shop, or any hospitality business, requires courage.

Their advice?

Don’t be afraid to be different. You don’t have to follow the template set by every other café. If you have an idea that aligns with your brand and your vision, pursue it wholeheartedly.

The most memorable spaces are often the ones that take thoughtful risks.
