Jardin de Luna Tile: The Story Of The Rabbit In The Moon

Story time with Katie Deedy, the designer behind the Jardin de Luna Clay Tile

Our Jardin de Luna, which is our most popular tile is inspired by something called “The Rabbit in the Moon.” Now, we’ve all heard of the man and the moon. And since you can probably guess, as the moon has been around for quite a while, different cultures have different visions of what they see on the face of the moon. Much like when you look at a bunch of clouds: we all are going to see something different.

Well, there is an Aztec legend about Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec Feathered Serpent God, then walking on earth in human form. He is taking a walk on a long journey. And he grows very tired and very hungry. At one point, he is starving, and he has nothing to eat, and he feels that he might die. Out of the corner of his eye he sees a little rabbit. And the rabbit offers himself as sacrifice, to feed the god, so that he may survive.

Quetzalcoatl was so moved by this little bunny’s tremendous generosity that he lifted the rabbit up to the moon. He let the rabbit know that everyone in the entire world for the rest of time will see how wonderful and valiant the rabbit was by shining his light from high above. And so, the Rabbit and the Moon is what some cultures have seen there. The deer and the herbs are just an added bonus.
