GROUT + TRIM

GROUT TYPE

  • For a modern look or more color options, choose Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA.
  • For a classic Saltillo look, we recommend MAPEI 2-1/2 to 1 Saltillo Gray Sanded Grout, which pairs naturally with the warmth and variation of terracotta.

Warm, neutral grout colors create a softer, tonal look with the natural clay, while contrasting colors create more definition around each tile. Highly contrasting grout colors are generally not recommended, as they can emphasize natural variation.

GROUT JOINT SPACING

Joint spacing typically ranges from 1/4" to 3/4".

Because terracotta has natural variation in size and shape, tighter joints may make differences in size and alignment more noticeable.

Larger joints work well with larger-format tiles, helping accommodate natural size variation while creating a more traditional terracotta look.

TRIM + TRANSITIONS

When transitioning between Pressed Terracotta and another material or finishing an exposed edge:

  • Miter Cut → Clean 45° finish for corners, niches, and edges
  • Stairs + Steps → Miter tile at the tread and riser to create a finished 90° corner
  • Wood Transition → Creates a finished connection between terracotta and wood flooring; finished heights may vary
  • Schluter Trim → Clean metal edge for floors or walls and a more modern finish
  • Exposed Edge → A simple, natural option; exposed terracotta edges must be properly sealed

SEALING + MAINTENANCE

SEALING

Supremo Saltillo is delivered pre-sealed. After installation, apply a top coat sealer to protect the surface and grout joints and help maintain the tile’s appearance over time.

We recommend a compatible top coat sealer, especially in high-traffic or moisture-prone areas.

Top coat sealers provide:

  • An additional protective layer for the tile surface
  • Sealing and protection of grout joints
  • Added durability in high-traffic areas

RESEALING

There is no fixed resealing schedule. Frequency depends on traffic, environment, and desired appearance.

Some installations may need resealing after 1 year, while others may go 3–5 years or longer.

A simple test: If water no longer beads on the surface and begins absorbing into the tile or grout, resealing is recommended.

ROUTINE CARE

For regular cleaning, use a pH-neutral cleaner and avoid harsh or acidic products that may affect the sealed surface.
