As seen in the newest and most ambitious HGTV show yet
Mika and Brian Kleinschmidt are back at it again! The husband and wife duo are well known for their 100 days challenge shows, but this time they competed against each other in order to win a $50,000 prize to charity. Fortunately, they were not alone: on every chapter of this 6 episode series they teamed up with some of HGTV’s all-time stars!
This series has everything we like from a great renovation show: designs, plans, partnerships, laughs, sledge hammers, and the best part of all, Clay Imports tiles! Find out which tiles were used in the 100 Day Hotel Challenge, and how those tiles can also help improve your next renovation project.
May the Best Spouse Win
In the 100 Day Hotel Challenge, two motels in Salter path, NC got a much needed renovation. Mika worked on the William and Garland meanwhile Brian tried to bring new life to The Beacon, a newly renovated and rebranded motel. With a budget of $225,000 they fully renovated a single and double room, the lobby, a kitchenette, an outdoor space, the luxury suite, and the motel exterior. The final result of every episode is judged by none other than Drew and Jonathan Scott, the Property Brothers themselves, so the stakes were very, very high!
In the first episode, we see Jonathan Knight and Kristina Crestin help Mika bring a new look to the classic aesthetic William and Garland Motel is recognized for. This first episode is all about the single and double rooms and Team Mika decided to use tiles from our Desert Fields collection to make a pair of astonishing bathrooms.
Palo Santo and Nightfall were used in the single bedroom, in a classic checkerboard layout on the floor and the pony wall to achieve a boutique hotel right by the ocean vibe. The double bedroom bathroom features a similar aesthetic, but this time with a green tint, thanks to our Yucca Crackle and Espina Gloss tiles used from floor to ceiling.
Lobbying for a Win
This checkerboard combination set the tone for the general look and feel Mika wanted to achieve across her renovations and this is evident in the new lobby for the William and Garland Motel. And when we say “the new lobby” is quite literal: the motel didn’t have a lobby so Mika and Galey Alix had to build one from scratch!
The result was a very welcoming space with a fantastic classic woodwork that highlights the key cabinet behind the podium desk on one side and a L shaped sofa on the other side framed with a big window all around. The tile work was, as Galey put it, basket weave on steroids: Espina, Nightfall and Mirage tiles were used in a similar checked pattern that aimed to create a timeless, classic look that will be in style for years to come.
Heating up the Kitchenette
For the third episode, Brian finally gets some of the Clay Imports charm and decides to use our Whiskey tiles to create a modern looking bathroom that complements perfectly with the vision his partner had, the host of Reno My Rental and Design Star: Next gen winner, Carmeon Hamilton. For them, light and bright should be prevalent, so by using the contrast of the brown of our tiles with the white walls they could achieve a retro throwback look with a lot of texture and warmth.
Meanwhile, the guest HGTV star on Mika’s team, Grace Mitchell wanted to use blue and green to bring the outdoor colors in, in a modern and fresh way. Both she and Mika built a fantastic bathroom with a combo of vertical layout of our Playa tiles with a traditional square fitting of our Bomber Jacket green square tiles, so the space feels bigger.
Of course, our hearts skipped a beat when Jonathan Scott said he loved the floor tiling! And we can’t blame him: Lotus Cantina has been one of our most beloved tiles.
The Suite Life
The last bathrooms where Clay Imports tiles were used in the 100 Day Hotel Challenge are featured in the luxury suites of each motel. Brian’s team for this episode were Poonam Moore, from Rico to the Rescue, and Cristy Lee, from Steal This House and Battle on the Mountain. Together, the trio took a different turn of what Mika did in the first episode with our Espina and Mirage tiles. They arrange them in vertical lines that give a taller look to this bathroom. A simple yet elegant and tasteful design that definitely elevates the overall look of the luxury suite of The Beacon.
On the other side, Mika, with the help of Kim Myles and Kim Wolfe conquered the Kim-possible task and created a gorgeous bathroom with a bathtub and walk-in shower with a combination of our Nightfall tiles for the walls and Cotto tiles for flooring.
The trio wanted to use a dark tone, because black recedes from the eye, making the bathroom look bigger and more expansive, but the final result not only elevates the overall design of the suite; is by far one of the best looking bathrooms we have seen and we are very proud of being part of such an accomplishment.
