When Natalie O Design began envisioning Loodos Coffee & Donuts in Louisville, Kentucky, the goal was to create a space people would want to return to, one that felt welcoming, energetic, and full of small moments of discovery.
As the sister concept to Bamboo Coffee & Donuts, Loodos shares the same DNA but has a personality all its own. While Bamboo embraces a calm, soft, and minimal aesthetic, Loodos leans into richer colors, bolder forms, and more layered details. Both cafés are rooted in natural materials, greenery, and a strong sense of community, but Loodos turns up the volume in all the right places.
At the center of that vision were Clay Imports breeze blocks, which became both an architectural feature and an organizing element for the café. Good design, much like a good donut, sometimes comes down to what you leave out.
At Natalie O Design, every project begins with listening. By working closely with clients, the team creates spaces that reflect each brand's unique vision, values, and personality. At Loodos, that collaborative approach shaped a cafe experience that feels authentic, inviting, and distinctly its own.
A Material That Set the Tone
For Lead Designer Sydney Alvey, the breeze blocks weren't an afterthought or decorative accent. They were part of the design from the very beginning.
As construction came together, the blocks began doing even more than originally imagined. Their patterned openings frame glimpses of people, plants, and shifting daylight, creating ever-changing views throughout the café.
"Once they were installed, I loved how they framed little moments throughout the café. You catch glimpses of people, plants, and light through the openings, and it made the space feel much more dynamic than a solid partition ever could".
Rather than separating spaces with solid walls, the breeze blocks create definition while preserving openness. It's this balance that gives Loodos its inviting character.
The Versatility of Breeze Blocks

"I love that they can be both functional and sculptural, "Sydney explains. "People may think of them as only decorative. They create texture, define space, filter light, and become a focal point all at the same time."
At Loodos, the blocks allow light, air, and conversation to move freely through the café while subtly guiding how guests experience the space.
"They created separation without making the space feel closed off," she says. "The openness of the blocks encourages visual connection and makes the café feel welcoming, which was exactly the atmosphere we wanted to create."
Designing for Everyday Rituals
The best cafés become part of people's routines, making design just as important as the coffee being served.
Sydney approached Loodos with that everyday experience in mind.

"I wanted people to feel comfortable lingering, whether they were meeting a friend, working for an hour, or stopping in for a quick coffee," she says. "The variety of seating, layered spaces, and warm materials give people options and make the café feel approachable."
Every design decision supports those daily rituals, encouraging guests to slow down, settle in, and make the café their own.
Designing for Joy
Ask Sydney what she hopes visitors remember after leaving Loodos, and her answer is that they leave feeling energized and inspired. The goal was to create a place that feels memorable, uplifting, and somewhere people genuinely look forward to returning to.
That philosophy extends throughout the project. Rather than relying on a single standout feature, the design layers breeze blocks, warm wood, greenery, bold color, and soft seating to create a space that carries Natalie O Design's mark.

"The mix of materials says it all," Sydney says. "Combining breeze blocks, wood, bold color, greenery, and soft seating creates depth and personality while still feeling warm and approachable."
Looking back, the breeze blocks surpassed what the team originally imagined.
"I was surprised by how much the breeze blocks transformed the space, "she reflects. "They started as a design feature, but they ended up shaping the atmosphere and becoming one of the most memorable elements of the café."
For Sydney, that's the difference between a space that's simply beautiful and one that's genuinely joyful.
